Orrville Exchange Club

Nicholas Cascarelli, EdD, Wayne County Health Commissioner for the past two years, spoke about three units the health department focuses on: Administration, Environmental Health and Patient Care to Exchange Club when members met May 11.

Cascarelli said Wayne County Health Department has 32 full-time employees plus eight part-time. He said last year WCHD infectious disease nurses investigated a total of 663 infectious disease reports, which was a 17 percent increase from 2015.

The department issues certified birth certificates for anyone born in Ohio and death certificates may be obtained from the local health department where the death occurred.

The department does inspections in Environmental Health including: food, septic, pools, private water systems, solid waste facilities, construction and demolition of buildings, tattoos and body cut, nuisance complaints, campgrounds, residential and commercial plumbing and rabies and vector control.

Dean Sullivan gave $80 as a blessing for his 80th birthday. Lisa Reusser again encouraged members to renew their flag reservations for “Field of Honor.” Ralph Keplar said more members are needed to attend the social June 15 at the Akron Rubber Ducks game at $25 per person. Cost includes a meal, game and fireworks.

Scott Gold reported a Maker Faire will be held May 20 at Akron University Wayne College, featuring 75 vendors displaying their works. Volunteers are needed that day.

Dalton Historical Society

When the Dalton Community Historical Society met, the group was informed the museum building had received a new roof the first part of April. The new roof was made possible through a grant from Wayne County Community Foundation.

There were several acquisitions received in the last month and Vickie Menges told the group she and Dave had taken some artifacts to the elementary school to show the third-graders. Menges also went with Christie McCune when she gave her presentation on the Dalton Gazette & Kidron News to the third-grade classes.

Most of the meeting was spent going over preparations for the Community Strawberry Festival which is being put on by the Dalton Ruritans and the Historical Society. The location of the festival has been changed to the Village Green Park and the historical society will hold an open house during the festival. The festival will be June 10, 4-7 p.m.

WCC Ladies Golf

Wooster Country Club Ladies Golf Association play May 17 with the play being points. Winners, in order of placement, were: Mary Jo Barnett, DeDe Gerber, Polly Dodenhoff.

Next week's game will be low putts by flights.

Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary

When the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary held its April meeting at the Family Life Center, Capt. Madelaine Dwier reported the new playground at the Center has been approved and ordered.

Twenty-seven children will participate in the Army's Star Search Talent Competition. On May 19, the after-school program children celebrated at an end-of-school-year banquet.

The auxiliary will provide monetary support to the 50-55 children attending Day Camp. Auxiliary volunteers passed out 600 pair of socks to residents of local nursing homes. The Coats for Kids program will have intake/?distribution day Oct. 14. Coats, socks and underwear will be given to needy families.

Bev. Theil provided a slide show of Salvation Army ladies giving out doughnuts to servicemen during World War I.

The next meeting will be May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Family Life Center.

Wayne County PERI

Wayne County Public Employees Retirees held its May meeting at the Barn in Smithville. Two representatives, Tim Holman and Todd Gordon, of The Village Network presented the program. They gave a history of the organization beginning with Boys Village through the expansion to four sites. Today the organization also helps girls and people into their 60s. In addition to residence programs they also have day programs and affiliations with local schools.

PERI meets every two months and new members are welcome. Any person and spouse who has paid retirement funds to PERS is eligible for membership. A report is given at each meeting regarding current legislation and activities of the Ohio and U.S. Legislature that could affect retirement income and health care insurance.
