CDC puts 12 Kansas counties at medium COVID-19 community level, 1 at high this week

Wichita Eagle - 1/22/2023

Jan. 22—Kansas has a seven-day rolling average of 153 new COVID-19 cases per day as of Jan. 18, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. As of Jan. 18, the state has seen 1,937 new cases and 69 deaths since Jan. 11.

Sedgwick County remains at low community level, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with about 69 cases per 100,000 in population.

Across the state, just one county is at the CDC's high COVID-19 community level, Wilson County. Another 12 are medium: Trego, Seward, Cloud, Republic, Chase, Greenwood, Lyon, Coffey, Cherokee, Wyandotte, Leavenworth and Doniphan counties.

In counties at high, the CDC recommends masking in public, indoor places. At a medium level, the agency cautions those at higher risk for severe disease to consider masking and other measures.

The CDC updates the metric each Thursday for U.S. counties and bases the assessment on the number of new cases and hospitalizations per 100,000 people (seven-day totals) and the percent of staffed hospital beds occupied by COVID-positive patients (a seven-day average).

How to protect yourself from COVID-19

It's important to be mindful to prevent infections. Here are some ways to protect yourself against the coronavirus:

— Wear a face mask when necessary

— Keep 6 feet of distance from others when possible

— Avoid large group gatherings

— Wash your hands often

If you start to develop COVID-19 symptoms, it's important to get tested. Tests can be found through your local health department or you can purchase an at-home test at many grocery stores and pharmacies.

If you test positive for COVID-19, the CDC says to stay isolated at least five days after symptom onset. If you have to be around family members and others in your home, wear a high-quality mask.
